In today’s world, the importance of choosing a trusted waste management company cannot be overstated. Proper waste management not only ensures environmental sustainability but also contributes to public health and safety. Unfortunately, not all waste management companies uphold the same standards of reliability and efficiency. Therefore, it’s crucial for businesses and communities to carefully select a waste management partner they can trust.

Manchester Waste Management Company Fined £870k+ for Illegal Waste Exports

Manchester’s Roydon Resource and Recovery recently found themselves in hot water, slapped with a hefty fine exceeding £870,000 for illegally exporting 10 shipping containers of waste to Poland. In a legal battle brought forward by the Environment Agency, the company’s director, Wilfred Sumner, was also personally fined £10,000.

The court ruling revealed that the waste wasn’t intended for recycling as claimed but rather for incineration as fuel, signalling a blatant disregard for proper waste management practices. The convictions stemmed from not only the illegal export of waste but also the flouting of waste management regulations. A staggering 247 tonnes of refuse were unlawfully shipped to Poland “under the guise of the green list process”, purportedly consisting of clean plastics sorted from household waste. However, investigations unveiled that the majority of plastics were unsuitable for recycling.

Further scrutiny by the Environment Agency uncovered that the waste was heavily contaminated with various household items, ranging from electricals to nappies and oil canisters. This illicit activity evidently yielded substantial financial gain for both the company and its director.

During the sentencing at Manchester Crown Court on March 27, 2024, Roydon Resource Recovery was hit with a significant fine of £870,000, which included £811,181 in Proceeds of Crime. Emma Viner, enforcement and investigations manager, hailed the outcome of the prosecution, citing it as a stern warning to those involved in waste crime. She emphasised the agency’s unwavering commitment to cracking down on such illegal practices and ensuring that waste criminals face the consequences of their actions.

Viner also underscored the detrimental impact of illegal waste operations on legitimate businesses, highlighting how they undercut prices and harm the environment. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of adhering to waste management regulations to safeguard the environment and communities from the adverse effects of irresponsible waste disposal.

“The Environment Agency welcome the outcome of this prosecution. Roydon Resource Recovery and Wildred Sumner showed a disregard for legislation in place to protect our environment and communities.

Environment Agency officers work tirelessly to tackle this type of criminality and the outcome of this prosecution sends a strong message to those involved in waste crime.

Through our investigations and our work under the Proceeds of Crime Act we will ensure that waste crime does not pay and that criminals will be brought to justice.

Illegal waste operations like this, undermine legitimate businesses, undercut their prices and blight the environment.”
